Founded in 1875 when residential lots were first sold there, Santa Monica showed signs of its future prosperity within its first decade. By 1886 the town had a thriving business district and a popular pier and hotel. Soon after the turn of the century, business and tourism prosperity were responsible for the construction of five amusement piers and greatly expanded business activity.

Today, Santa Monica is coveted as one of California’s most desirable communities. Its approximately 88,000 residents and significant tourist population enjoy unsurpassed cultural, social and recreational opportunities and a thriving, sophisticated town center just steps from the beach. In addition, the chic city has enjoyed job growth and increased tourism in the last two decades, due in part to major revitalization.

The Santa Monica public schools are governed by the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and there are 10 private elementary and secondary schools in addition to Santa Monica College,  Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School and The Art Institute of California, Los Angeles.
